The Centre for Tagore Studies, Swami Vivekananda University, continues to grow as a distinguished academic and cultural hub dedicated to the study of Rabindranath Tagore’s life, works, and global intellectual legacy. Under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Deb Narayan Bandyopadhyay, Director, and Dr. Rituparna Chakraborty, Deputy Director, the centre has witnessed a vibrant year marked by impactful programmes, scholarly events, and future-oriented initiatives.
A Highly Successful 3-Month Certificate Course (2024–25)
A major highlight of the academic year has been the centre’s three-month Certificate Course on Tagore Studies, which attracted over 100 enrolled students. Curated and guided by the Director and Deputy Director, the course offered a comprehensive understanding of Tagore’s literary brilliance, educational ideals, cultural philosophy, and humanistic worldview. Delivered by eminent academicians and invited experts, the programme nurtured critical thinking and encouraged students to revisit Tagore’s relevance in contemporary society.
Special Lectures by National and International Scholars
Throughout 2024–25, the centre organised several special lectures on campus, featuring renowned scholars and cultural practitioners from India and abroad, brilliant minds such as Martin Kämpchen, Prof. Amrit Sen. These intellectually stimulating sessions explored diverse facets of Tagore’s poetry, prose, art, music, education, and global humanism.
The leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Bandyopadhyay and Dr. Chakraborty played a key role in curating these events and in creating a meaningful academic dialogue within the university community. The events, and sessions are coordinated by Dr. Madhumita Roy and Dr. Shreyoshi Dhar who function as the centre coordinators.
International Conference (June 2024)
One of the landmark achievements of the year was the International Conference held in June 2024, which brought together national and international academicians, researchers, and Tagore scholars. The conference served as a significant platform for interdisciplinary discussions, critical analyses, and scholarly collaborations on Tagore’s contributions to world literature, cultural exchange, and universal human values. Through this event, the centre further strengthened its position as a major institution promoting Tagore-oriented research and academic discourse.
Future Vision: International Conference in 2026
Moving forward, the Centre for Tagore Studies is planning to organise another major international conference in 2026. The upcoming event aims to expand global participation, promote new research pathways, and encourage comparative and cross-cultural engagements with Tagore’s thought. This future initiative reflects the centre’s commitment to sustained academic excellence under the dynamic guidance of its Director and Deputy Director.
