Centre

The Centre for Gender Studies at Swami Vivekananda University, Barrackpore, has emerged as a leading hub for gender studies, transgender studies, culture studies and inclusivity in India. With its focus on academic research, interdisciplinary learning, and global collaboration, the Centre continues to strengthen the university’s commitment to equity and social justice.

A major milestone this year was the successful completion of the Centre’s Three-Month Certificate Program in Gender Studies. Designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of key issues related to gender identity, feminist theory, and social structures, the program featured lectures by renowned academicians from across the world. The course saw over 100 participants enrol and successfully complete the program, reflecting its growing popularity and academic relevance.

In August 2024, the Centre hosted its academic event - the International Conference on “Restructuring the Canon: Gender, Transgender, and the Subversion of Identities.” This global academic gathering brought together experts in gender theory, transgender discourse, and identity studies to explore how traditional canons are being reshaped through contemporary research. The conference, widely appreciated for its depth and diversity, provided a platform for meaningful dialogue on the evolving landscape of gender and social representation.

Building on these achievements, the Centre for Gender Studies at Swami Vivekananda University is now planning future international conferences, certificate programs, workshops, and collaborative research initiatives. These upcoming academic activities aim to further promote critical thinking, social awareness, and research-driven insights into gender, sexuality, and human rights.

The Centre is led by an esteemed team of scholars:

Director: Prof. (Dr.) Deb Narayan Bandyopadhyay

Deputy Director: Dr. Rituparna Chakraborty

Coordinators: Dr. Shubham Bhattacharjee and Mr. Sudipta Dutta

Under their guidance, the Centre strives to become a premier destination for gender studies research, creating an environment where students, researchers, and educators can engage with cutting-edge discussions on gender equality, transgender experiences, and identity politics.

As one of the fastest-growing academic centres at Swami Vivekananda University, the Centre for Gender Studies continues to champion diversity, academic excellence, and global engagement. With more flagship programs and international events on the horizon, the Centre remains committed to shaping the future of gender-focused education and research in India.
