Facilities for Differently-Abled Persons (Divyangjan)

An inclusive, barrier-free campus

Swami Vivekananda University, Barrackpore, is committed to providing an inclusive, barrier-free and dignified learning environment for students, staff and visitors with disabilities, in keeping with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and the accessibility guidelines of the UGC and AICTE. The University makes sure that no person is denied access to education, information or campus life on account of disability.

Barrier-free Physical Environment

  • Ramps with handrails at the main entrances and at academic and administrative buildings, for wheelchair users and persons with limited mobility.
  • Lifts are being installed in multi-storey academic blocks, so that classrooms, laboratories and offices on all floors can be reached.
  • Designated washrooms for differently-abled persons, with suitable fittings and easy access.
  • Wheelchairs on campus for anyone who needs help moving around.
  • Clear signage and wide, obstruction-free corridors and pathways.

Academic and Examination Support

  • Scribes or writers and extra time in examinations for eligible candidates, according to applicable regulations.
  • Seating on the ground floor or close to an accessible route for classes and examinations wherever needed.
  • Help from faculty mentors in accessing study materials and e-resources through the library and the University’s digital platforms.

Health and Welfare

  • A medical room on campus, with first-aid facilities and access to medical assistance.
  • An Equal Opportunity Cell or designated officer who handles the concerns and grievances of differently-abled students and staff. The Cell also promotes awareness and sensitisation across the campus.

The University keeps reviewing and improving its infrastructure and support services, so that the campus becomes more accessible and inclusive over time.
